Problems and solutions

TL;DR: Every soap maker runs into problems - soda ash, orange stains, seizing or soft soap. This section is a diagnostic guide: symptom → cause → solution. The good news: most problems are solvable.

Every soap maker runs into problems - soda ash on the surface, mysterious orange spots after weeks of aging, soap that has stuck in seconds or is still not solid after a month. This section is a diagnostic guide: symptom → cause → solution.

The good news: most problems in CP production are solvable or at least understandable. Understanding the cause is half the solution.

Surface and appearance problems

Soda ash: white dusty coating on soap

The white or grey powdery coating on the surface of fresh soap is formed by a chemical reaction (CO₂ + alkali = sodium carbonate). It is the most common aesthetic defect, but a purely aesthetic problem - the soap is completely safe.

The page covers: the chemistry of emergence, why some formulas suffer more, 6 preventative measures and 3 methods of removal (mating, trimming, rinsing).

DOS spots - dreaded orange spots

Orange or brown spots + rancid smell indicate oxidation of unsaturated oils during ripening. May appear 4-8 weeks after production - kompletní průvodce covers which oils are risky (flax, hemp, sunflower), catalysts of oxidation, prevention of antioxidants (vitamin E, ROE), proper storage. Diagnostic table: DOS vs. vanillin browning vs. stearic spots.

Colour problems: browning, bleeding, fading

What happens to the colours during maturation? Vanillin browning from FO, bleeding of pigments between layers, fading of natural dyes (spirulina, matcha, beets), neon colors after aging, unexpected purple or gray tones - kompletní průvodce with causes, prevention and solutions for each type of colour defect with a diagnostic table.

Consistency and solidification problems

Seizing and trace acceleration

A mass that has thickened in seconds after the addition of EO or additive - from slight acceleration to complete seizing (unusable stiff dough) - requires immediate action. Detailed guide covers causes (eugenol, aldehydes, honey, bentonite, overheating), prevention and hot process rescue procedure. Diagnostic table by symptom.

Soft or sticky soap

Soap that cannot be removed from the mould even after 48 hours or after 4 weeks is still not solid - requires diagnosis of the cause. complete guide covers 6 causes (unsaturated oils, too much water, low NaOH, high superfat, overheating, summer production) with specific solutions. Table of solidification accelerators.

Troubleshooting encyclopedia: overview of all problems

Complete Reference Guide - all problems sorted by production phase: during production (seizing, ricing, lye pocket), after removal from the mould (soda ash, crack, stickiness), during maturation (DOS, sweating, odour) and with finished soap (weak foam, irritation).

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which page contains the solution to my problem? See the table below - enter the symptom and stage of production. The page will direct you to a more detailed guide.

Are problems in CP production dangerous? Most aesthetic problems (soda ash, color fading) are not dangerous. Safety hazards (lye pocket, lack of saponification) are rare if you follow proper mixing procedures and calculations.

How long does it take to diagnose? If you have finished soap: 2-3 minutes. If you have a problem during production: an immediate solution is needed (e.g. HP rescue).

Can I save a soap with DOS? Small orange spots are not a health hazard - the soap is safe to use. If DOS spreads or smells strong, remove the soap from sale.

What if my recipe is wrong? Check SoapCalc, verify SAP oil numbers and percentages. Larger errors (NaOH 20-30% lower) can be corrected with HP rescue.

How long does it take to age soap with problems? Standard Castilian or olive soap: 4-8 weeks or longer. Soft soap may need 2-3 months.
